As applicants consider their discipline and program choices in the 2020 R-1 Main Residency Match, we are sharing some data that highlights the factors applicants have historically identified as influential in their decision making.

Over a 10-year period (2010 – 2019), we asked respondents to our post-match survey to identify which factors influenced their decisions about their first-choice discipline and first-choice program location. We’ve compiled their responses into easy-to-understand heat maps that illustrate what is (and is not) important to a decade of post-graduate medical trainees when it comes to choosing a discipline and program location.

We hope this new data provides some useful insight into some of the driving forces behind applicant decision making.
