TRAINING LEVEL ELIGIBILITY Subspecialty: Medicine subspecialties

Training level: Current resident

  • Eligibility details:The first iteration is open to PGY3 residents currently in a recognized Royal College Internal Medicine program (Canadian or ACGME – accredited US Internal Medicine Program) and to Internal Medicine residents who are PGY4 Chief Residents.PGY3 applicants who are off-cycle by more than six months (with a start date after December 31, 2025) are not eligible for this year’s PGY4 match. All other PGY4s will be considered for the second iteration.

Training level: Previous subspecialty training/transfers

  • Eligibility details: Not eligible in the first iteration. Trainees currently enrolled in Canadian or US sub-specialty training will only be considered for the 2nd iteration.

Training level: Licensed Physicians (including restricted licenses)

  • Eligibility details: Positions in the first iteration are not open to candidates currently in specialty practice and looking for retraining, but if they meet all other criteria, these individuals will be considered for the 2nd iteration.

Subspecialty: Adult Critical Care Medicine

Training level: Current Resident

  • Eligibility details:

Graduates of a Canadian Medical School who are:

    • Currently in their third year (R3) of training in an internal medicine program
    • Currently in their final year (R5-R6) or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Accredited program in Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery or Cardiac Surgery.
    • Local (Dalhousie) residents who are currently enrolled in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Accredited program in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, or Internal Medicine and have completed three (3) years of one of these primary specialties; or in an RCPSC program in Cardiac Surgery and have completed four (4) years of the specialty training prior to application to the Critical Care Medicine program. Candidates applying under this category must have the agreement of their Program Director and the Critical Care Medicine Program Director to facilitate the achievement of all required competencies for both programs within the overlapping year.
    • Residents currently in their final year or who within the last year have completed training in an ACGME-accredited US program in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery or Cardiac Surgery may be eligible to apply. Applicants in this category must receive an official ruling of eligibility to sit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada exams in their core specialty prior to application to be eligible to apply.

Graduates of non-LCME/CACMS-accredited medical schools who are:

    • Currently in their third year (R3) of training in a Canadian or ACGME- accredited US internal medicine program
    • Currently in their final year (R5-R6) or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program in Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, or Cardiac Surgery.
    • Local (Dalhousie) residents who are currently enrolled in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Accredited program in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, or Internal Medicine and have completed three (3) years of one of these primary specialties; or in an RCPSC program in Cardiac Surgery and have completed four (4) years of the specialty training prior to application to the Critical Care Medicine program. Candidates applying under this category must have the agreement of their Program Director and the Critical Care Medicine Program Director to facilitate the achievement of all required competencies for both programs within the overlapping year.
    • Subspecialty trainees (ie., residents currently enrolled in a subspecialty training program) are not eligible for the first iteration but may enter the second iteration if other criteria are met.

Subspecialty: Adult Palliative Medicine

Training level: Current Resident

  • Eligibility details:

Graduates of a Canadian Medical School who are:

    • Currently Internal Medicine Residents at PGY-3 or PGY-4 level.
    • Medicine Subspecialty trainees (ie., residents currently enrolled in a medicine subspecialty training program PGY-4 or PGY-5) are eligible for the first round match.
    • Currently in their final year (R5), or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program in Anesthesia, or Neurology and are eligible for the first round match.
    • Entry from other specialties may occur but must follow completion of the primary specialty training that includes twelve (12) months of clinical internal medicine-based rotations with a minimum of six (6) months at a senior level.
    • Currently in their final year or who have completed training in an accredited US ACGME-accredited program in Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, or Neurology may be eligible to apply. Applicants in this category must receive an official ruling of eligibility to sit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada exams in their core specialty prior to application to be eligible to apply. If they have received this approval from the Royal College, they would be eligible for the first round of the match.

Graduates of non-LCME/CACMS-accredited medical schools who are:

    • Currently training in a Canadian or ACGME-accredited US internal medicine program at PGY-3 or PGY-4 level.
    • Currently in their final year (R5) or who have completed training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program in Neurology or Anesthesia

For applicants with permanent resident status who are currently at the PGY3 level in an accredited United States Internal Medicine Training program, a copy of the candidate’s RCPSC Assessment of Training must be provided at the time of application.

Subspecialty: Geriatric Psychiatry

Training level: Current Resident

  • Eligibility details: Currently in their fourth or final year (R4-R5) of training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accredited Psychiatry residency program.
RESTRICTIONS Eligibility of Sponsored Residents on a training visa

Visa-sponsored residents are not eligible to apply for positions through the Fall Subspecialty Residency Match. Instead, visa-sponsored trainees should contact the PGY4 Subspecialty Training Program to inquire about the application process for sponsored residents.

COVID-19 Vaccination

COVID-19 vaccination is currently required for all healthcare workers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI by public health order. As long as that order remains in effect, candidates who electively choose not to be vaccinated against COVID-19 are not eligible to work, and therefore, ineligible for training.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES

MEDICAL COUNCIL OF CANADA EXAMS MCCQE Part I

  • Requirement: Mandatory with exceptions
  • Date/milestone assessment submission required: File review opening

The province will accept the following in place of the MCCQE Part I:

  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1 and 2; or
  • National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Parts I, II and III; or
  • Federation Licensing Examination (Flex) Components 1 and 2; or
  • Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Levels 1 and 2.

RETURN OF SERVICE (ROS) REQUIREMENTS Any candidate who has an undischarged Return of Service (ROS) obligation must disclose such obligations at time of application.
MEDICAL EDUCATION Proof of MD Degree or DO Degree (Osteopathic medicine)

Graduates of Non-LCME/CACMS-Accredited Medical Schools (GNLCAMS) must be a graduate of an acceptable medical school or a graduate of a US school of Osteopathic Medicine and must meet provincial licensing eligibility in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

A copy of medical/osteopathy school marks/transcripts and medical degree/diploma must be submitted. Documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a notarized translation.
