College of Physicians and Surgeons Prince Edward Island

SOURCE OF FUNDING Ministries of Health – Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island
TRAINING LEVEL ELIGIBILITY All Pediatrics residents in ACGME-accredited Pediatrics programs who are interested in applying for a Pediatrics subspecialty program in Canada will need to have their training assessed by the RCPSC in comparison to Canadian training.

  • A resident who has or will complete their Pediatrics residency in an ACGME-accredited program in the U.S. will need to complete an approved PGY-4 year in a core RCPSC Pediatrics program in Canada to be eligible to apply for subspecialty training in Canada. The RCPSC assessment of U.S. training will establish what is needed during the PGY-4 year. U.S residents interested in doing a PGY-4 year in a Canadian core Pediatrics program will need to reach out to the residency programs individually and explore if this opportunity is available.

OR

  • If a resident is completing a PGY-4 chief resident year in an ACGME-accredited program in the U.S., the RCPSC assessment of training will establish if the resident is eligible for the RCPSC examinations/fellowship. For more information on having your training assessed, please contact Chantal Benoit at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (cbenoit@royalcollege.ca)

Subspecialty: Pediatrics subspecialties

  • Training level: Current resident
  • Eligibility details: Competitive Stream positions are open to residents currently in their PGY4 year of a recognized Royal College General Pediatrics program. For positions listed under the Competitive Non-MOH stream, please review the program description as there are alternate eligibility criteria.

Training Program

Dalhousie University will also consider Canadian Citizens and those with permanent resident status who are currently in an accredited United States Pediatric Medicine Training program, but a copy of the candidate’s RCPSC Assessment of Training must be provided at the time of application.

All applicants must be eligible to register for an educational license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

A requirement for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia is that graduates of non-LCME or CACMS-accredited medical schools must include proof, as part of the completedlicenseapplication, that verification through Physicians Apply has been initiated.

RESTRICTIONS  Not eligible:

  • Applications that are off-cycle by more than six months (with a PGY3 or program end date that is later than December 31, 2025). Off-cycle applicants are welcome to contact programs of interest following the conclusion of the match should there be any unmatched positions available to be considered for off-cycle entry.
  • Previous subspecialty training /transfers
  • Licensed Physicians (including those on restricted licenses)
  • Visa-sponsored residents are not eligible to apply for positions through the Fall Subspecialty Residency Match. Instead, visa-sponsored trainees should contact the PGY4 Subspecialty Training Program to inquire about the application process for sponsored residents.

COVID-19 vaccination

COVID-19 vaccination is currently required for all healthcare workers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI by public health order. As long as that order remains in effect, candidates who electively choose not to be vaccinated against COVID-19 are not eligible to work, and therefore, ineligible for training.
